Leaker @StellaFudge who has a 74.2% accuracy rating on AppleTrack, has revealed on Twitter that Apple has developed a new tool called the “AirPods Firmware update” that allows AirPods to be manually updated. The software can be used with the entire AirPods lineup, including the regular AirPods, AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Max but the tool will be exclusively available to just Apple’s technicians.

There’s a catch though. It’s only available to Apple Technicians. It’s also only intended for people who use AirPods with non-Apple stuff, or AirPods that got mismatched firmware. — Stella – Fudge (@StellaFudge) December 10, 2021 Furthermore, Stella pointed out that the firmware updater is intended for AirPods that have been used with non-Apple devices or those that received mismatched firmware. There’s no information on how exactly this tool works, but if it’s real, it would be a welcome change compared to the existing updating method although we feel that Apple should have made a version available to end-users. Currently, the only way to update the AirPods’ firmware is to leave them connected to your iPhone or iPad and eventually the new firmware will be installed. To check which firmware version your AirPods are currently running, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap on the “i” button next to your AirPods, and you can find the firmware under the About section.
