Spotted by SegmentNext, the Sony patent actually has a security purpose in mind. It describes using motion sensors to identify specific patterns or ways a controller is picked up. And it will log the user into the console based on the way you pick it up, as opposed maybe a housemate or family member. From a security perspective, this prevents having you sign into your PSN account and typing in your password while other eyes are present. Alternatively, this also prevents others from accessing your account if you forget to log out.
If the implementation is accurate enough, then this will shave off a lot of time from the signing in process. But on the flip side, there could be more trouble if the system signs you into the wrong account. But at any rate, the system doesn’t specifically mention any console, let alone the PlayStation 5. And it’s always safer to assume this feature won’t be making its way to a console that’s so close to release. (Source: USPTO via SegmentNext)
